The 2026 BET Awards turned the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles into a three-and-a-half-hour celebration of Black culture, music and excellence, with Teyana Taylor emerging as the night's most decorated winner. Taylor collected four awards, including the inaugural Icon of the Year honour presented by Janet Jackson, a moment that left her in tears as Jackson introduced her from the stage.
Clipse matched Taylor with three wins of their own, including Album of the Year for Let God Sort Em Out and Best Group, while their collaboration with Kendrick Lamar, "Chains & Whips," earned Best Collaboration. Lamar added Best Male Hip-Hop Artist to his tally, his ninth time claiming the category.
Kehlani had a strong night, winning Best Female R&B/Pop Artist and Video of the Year for "Folded," capping a breakout year that included her first top 10 Hot 100 hit and a self-titled album that topped the R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. Cardi B took Best Female Hip-Hop Artist and delivered one of the evening's most talked-about performances, ripping through "Hello," "Check Please," "ErrTime" and "Pretty & Petty" with characteristic ferocity. Leon Thomas won Best Male R&B/Pop Artist for his MUTT Deluxe: HEEL era.
The most powerful segment of the evening was a D'Angelo tribute, with Ari Lennox, Raye, George Clinton and BJ the Chicago Kid performing classics from the late artist's catalogue. But the show-stopping moment came when Lauryn Hill accepted the inaugural Living Legend Icon Award following an all-star tribute from Queen Latifah, Nas, Common, Doechii, Lizzo, SZA and the War & Treaty.
"I have always cared about the expression and the representation of the dignity of our people," Hill told the crowd, in a rare and reflective public appearance. Music executive Sylvia Rhone received the Ultimate Icon Award, using her speech to address the encroachment of technology on creative work: "We make the algorithm, the algorithm doesn't make us. We must honour the musician, we must compensate the creator."
Comedian Druski hosted the ceremony, keeping the energy high throughout with skits and improvisational ribbing of audience members including Tyler Perry, Stevie Wonder and Max B. Olivia Dean won Best New Artist, rounding out a night that reinforced the breadth and depth of Black creative talent across music, film and culture.
