When Black Coffee released Subconsciously in 2021, it changed the conversation around African electronic music on the global stage. The album won a Grammy, topped dance charts worldwide, and opened doors for a generation of Afro house producers. Five years later, he is ready with the follow-up.
Subconsciously II, due for release on March 14, features 14 tracks that span deep house, Afro tech, and soulful vocal-led pieces. Early singles have already hinted at the direction. "Lost in You" with Jorja Smith is a slow-burning, bass-heavy track that sits somewhere between house music and contemporary R&B. "Nomvula" with Sun-El Musician reaches back into the Zulu musical traditions that have always informed Black Coffee production style.
The most anticipated collaboration is with Sampha, whose voice appears on the album closing track "Return." Details are scarce, but those who have heard it describe a deeply emotional, piano-driven piece that runs over seven minutes.

Production-wise, the album was recorded between Johannesburg, London, and Ibiza over an 18-month period. Black Coffee worked with a smaller team than on the first record, preferring to keep the sessions intimate. The result, based on the three tracks released so far, sounds more focused and personal.
A world tour will follow the album release, with confirmed dates at Coachella, Sonar Barcelona, and a headline show at Ushuaia Ibiza. A London date at Printworks is rumoured but not yet confirmed.
Black Coffee has spent two decades building a career that bridges continents and genres. Subconsciously II looks set to cement his position as one of the most important electronic artists working today.
