Blancpain has taken the most intriguing complication it has introduced in decades and made it permanent. The new Fifty Fathoms Tech Ref. 5019A arrives as a non-limited production model, bringing the patented 3-hour diving bezel, first unveiled on the 2023 Gombessa 70th Anniversary Act 2, into the mainstream collection for the first time.
The story begins with a practical problem. Traditional dive watches use a 60-minute bezel, a standard that has barely changed since Blancpain invented the secured rotating bezel in 1953. But modern technical diving, particularly with closed-circuit rebreathers, allows divers to stay submerged for two, three hours or more. A 60-minute scale simply cannot track that duration. Blancpain's answer was to re-engineer the GMT mechanism so that a dedicated hand completes a full rotation every three hours, paired with a bezel graduated accordingly. It remains the only watch in the industry to offer this function.
The new Ref. 5019A builds on the Gombessa's foundation with two notable additions. A date display has been integrated into the dial, making the watch far more practical as a daily wearer. And a redesigned strap attachment system, built around the central-lug architecture, allows tool-free changes between the supplied orange rubber strap and optional black or white alternatives.
The case remains substantial at 47mm in Grade 23 titanium, 14.81mm thick, water-resistant to 300 metres and equipped with a helium escape valve for saturation diving. Blancpain's "Absolute Black" dial treatment returns, absorbing up to 97 per cent of incoming light to eliminate reflections underwater. Luminous markings are deliberately split by function: blue-emission Super-LumiNova for all dive indications, including the 3-hour hand and bezel scale, and green-emission Super-LumiNova for standard timekeeping. At a glance, even in murky conditions, a diver can distinguish between elapsed dive time and current time.
Inside, the manufacture calibre 13P5A, derived from the proven 1315, delivers a 120-hour power reserve from its triple-barrel construction. That five-day autonomy matters for a watch designed for extended expeditions where daily winding is not guaranteed. The movement is visible through the sapphire display caseback.
Priced at CHF 20,500, the Fifty Fathoms Tech sits at the upper end of the Fifty Fathoms range, but the titanium construction, in-house movement, and a complication that has no equivalent anywhere in watchmaking justify the premium. The 47mm case will not suit every wrist, and Blancpain delivers the watch in its signature Peli case. For divers who need what this watch offers, there is simply nothing else like it.
