Bose has unveiled the second generation of its QuietComfort headphones, and the upgrade is more than cosmetic. The new QC Headphones inherit features previously reserved for the flagship QuietComfort Ultra series, including TrueSpatial immersive audio, three new limited-edition colourways and a redesigned headband that refines what was already one of the most comfortable pairs of headphones you could wear.
At $359, the 2nd Gen slots in below the $449 QuietComfort Ultra (2nd Gen), which itself got a refresh late last year. But the gap between the two has narrowed considerably. The headline addition is Bose Immersive Audio with head tracking, offering three listening modes. Still Mode locks the soundstage in place as your head moves, creating the illusion of a fixed pair of stereo speakers. Motion Mode lets the sweet spot follow your head, designed for commuting and on-the-go listening. Cinema Mode widens the soundstage and centres dialogue, aiming to replicate a theatre experience for video content and podcasts.
The noise cancellation has been rebranded as QuietControl and receives meaningful upgrades. A six-microphone array now compensates for gaps in the earcup seal, which Bose says makes ANC significantly more effective for anyone wearing glasses, hats or hairstyles that prevent a perfect fit. The Aware Mode has been refined too, with ActiveSense technology smoothing out sudden spikes in ambient noise rather than abruptly adjusting.
Lossless audio over wired USB-C arrives at 24-bit/48kHz, a welcome step for audiophiles who want wired fidelity from a wireless headphone. Two-way USB-C handles both playback and voice input for calls on Zoom or Teams, and a USB-C to 3.5mm cable is included for in-flight entertainment systems. Bluetooth Core 5.4 with multipoint connectivity rounds out the wireless spec sheet.
Visually, the redesign is subtle but considered. The headband uses smooth adjustable sliders with softer synthetic leather cushioning, and the earcups have gone oval for a more streamlined profile. Inside each cup, hidden colour accents create a two-tone look that pairs especially well with the three limited-edition finishes: Eucalyptus Green with a warm yellow interior, Dewdrop Mint with teal accents, and Rosewood Mauve with vibrant fuchsia pink. Standard Black and White Smoke options remain available.
Battery life holds steady at 24 hours, or 18 with Immersive Audio engaged. A 15-minute quick charge delivers 2.5 hours of playback, and you can charge while listening. Physical buttons replace the touch controls some competitors favour, positioned for easy reach without removing the headphones. The Bose app adds a three-band EQ, custom listening modes and shortcut configuration.
Preorders opened on 8 August at Bose.com, with shipping from 13 August. At $359, the QuietComfort 2nd Gen brings enough of the Ultra experience to challenge whether the extra $90 is still worth it. For anyone who values comfort and noise cancellation above all, the answer just got harder.
