When Abraham-Louis Breguet patented the tourbillon on 26 June 1801, he could not have foreseen that two centuries later his invention would remain the benchmark against which every other watchmaker measures its ambitions. To commemorate 225 years of that singular achievement, Breguet has released five new tourbillon timepieces, each offering a distinct interpretation of the complication that defined the maison.
The standout of the collection is the Marine Tourbillon Equation Marchante 5887, which reimagines one of Breguet's most technically ambitious references. The new version retains the original's combination of tourbillon, perpetual calendar and equation of time, but now presents them against a dial depicting the arrangement of the stars over Paris on the very night Breguet secured his patent. Painted over a Grande Feu enamel base with a blue gradient, the celestial map adds depth and poetry to an already extraordinary mechanism.
The 5887 is the most complex of the anniversary releases. Its calibre 581DPE movement offers an 80-hour power reserve via a peripheral rotor, beats at 4Hz, and carries a perpetual calendar alongside the equation of time display, which shows the difference between solar and civil time. The tourbillon sits in an aperture at five o'clock, visible through the sapphire caseback as well as the dial.
Only 25 pieces will be made, split between platinum on rubber at CHF 292,300 and platinum on a matching bracelet at CHF 370,000. At 43.9mm x 11.8mm with 100m water resistance, it is a proper marine watch in both name and capability, yet the dialwork elevates it far beyond anything the sports watch category usually produces.
The broader anniversary collection includes two Classique Tourbillon 7357 references in platinum and Breguet gold at 35mm, the Classique Tourbillon Sideral 7255 in platinum with an aventurine dial limited to 50 pieces, and the Tradition Tourbillon 7047, a 41mm open-worked showcase in platinum with Bleu de France accents, limited to 25 pieces at CHF 246,300.
Together, they represent a statement of intent from a maison that spent the better part of a decade appearing to lose its way. The 225th anniversary tourbillons suggest Breguet is back, and in formidable form.
