Chanel has confirmed it will bring its Resort 2027 collection to Sydney on 5 November, restaging the Cruise show that Matthieu Blazy first unveiled in Biarritz this April. It will be the first time any luxury house has mounted a runway show of this magnitude on Australian soil.

The announcement carries more weight than a typical pre-collection replica. Since Blazy took the reins as artistic director in late 2024, Chanel has entered what its CEO Leena Nair calls a period of "exceptional creative momentum." Revenues rose 2 per cent in 2025, and the house topped the Lyst Index for the first time, a quarterly measure of desire, demand and discovery. Taking the Cruise show to Sydney signals that this momentum is being channeled into geographic expansion as much as creative reinvention.

The collection itself was born for the seaside. Shown at Biarritz's Art Deco casino on the French Basque coast, Blazy looked to the town where Coco Chanel opened her first couture house in 1915 and invented what became known as resortwear. Nautical stripes, raffia skirts, swim caps with hedgehog spikes and those viral "barefoot shoes" filled the runway. Model Noor Khan closed the show in a turquoise sequined gown with a fishtail hem, a nod to Blazy's personal obsession with mermaids.

Sydney's harbour, surf beaches and outdoor culture make it a natural fit for a collection rooted in ocean life. "The choice of Sydney resonates with the spirit of the Cruise collection, which is resolutely focused on movement and an elsewhere," the house said in a statement. The venue has yet to be confirmed.

Chanel has been building its Australian presence deliberately. Last June it opened a 1,000-square-metre boutique in Sydney's former David Jones building on Market Street, its largest in the country. A Melbourne reopening is imminent. Australian ambassadors Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi keep the house firmly in the local conversation, as did the Chanel 25 campaign that restaged Michel Gondry's video for Kylie Minogue's "Come Into My World" with Minogue herself in a cameo.

Restaging pre-collections in far-flung cities is a well-established Chanel tradition, with previous stops including Miami, Hong Kong and Singapore. But the decision to go to Australia, a market without a traditional fashion week circuit, feels different. It is less about following the calendar and more about planting a flag. If the Biarritz audience, which included Nicole Kidman, Tilda Swinton and A$AP Rocky, is anything to go by, the Sydney guest list will be worth watching.
