Diageo has unveiled one of its most ambitious luxury whisky initiatives to date. The Rare Series, introduced under the company's Rare and Exceptional portfolio, brings together five extraordinarily scarce single malt Scotch whiskies, each selected for its rarity, provenance and exceptional maturity. Ranging from 33 to 55 years old, the collection represents a carefully curated showcase of some of the most remarkable casks in Diageo's extensive reserves.
The headline act is the Glenury Royal 1970, officially the oldest single malt Diageo has ever released. Distilled at the now-closed Highland distillery, which ceased production in 1985, this 55-year-old whisky spent over five decades maturing in American oak hogsheads before being married in European oak puncheons. Just 232 bottles exist worldwide, with only 21 allocated to the United States, each priced at $6,530. For collectors, this is a rare glimpse into a style of whisky-making that has disappeared entirely from the modern landscape.
Alongside the Glenury Royal, the collection includes a 42-year-old Clynelish from 1983, a whisky that captures the distillery's renowned waxy character in exceptional form. Layers of candlewax, rose petals and clover sweetness combine to create what many consider a benchmark example of mature Clynelish. Only 160 bottles were released globally, priced at $4,000 each.
The Caol Ila 1983, also 42 years old, is the oldest expression ever to carry the Islay distillery's own label. Initially matured in American oak before finishing in European oak puncheons, it balances classic coastal smoke and sea-salt character with remarkable depth and refinement. The Talisker 1992, at 33 years, is the most unconventional inclusion, originating from an experimental batch that spent more than two decades in Amoroso-seasoned American oak hogsheads, yielding smoked cherries, frankincense and dark fruit alongside Talisker's signature peppery brine.
Rounding out the collection is the Blair Athol 1991, a 34-year-old single malt matured in ex-sherry European oak and finished in Pedro Ximenez-seasoned new American oak hogsheads. Expect crème brûlée, treacle toffee, dried fruits and dark chocolate in a profile that Diageo describes as a first for the distillery. With 347 bottles available globally, it offers the most accessible entry point at $900.
Unlike traditional annual releases, the Rare Series has been designed as an evolving collection. Future editions will only appear when Diageo's master blenders identify casks that have reached optimal maturity. The collection is available exclusively through Diageo's Private Client programme, offering collectors access not just to rare whisky but to exclusive tastings and experiences. Given the exceptionally low bottle counts and the prestige surrounding this inaugural release, demand has already exceeded supply.
