Garmin has never been a brand that hides its ambitions. With the launch of the MARQ Gen 3 collection, the Kansas-based company has drawn a clear line between its capable Fenix series and something altogether more deliberate: six luxury tool watches, each engineered for a specific pursuit, each wearing its purpose on its ceramic bezel.

The collection, announced on 13 October, replaces the MARQ Gen 2 that launched in 2022. But this is not a gentle refresh. For the first time in the MARQ line's history, the new models feature hardware and capabilities that the Fenix 9 cannot match, giving buyers a genuine technical reason to step up rather than simply paying for premium materials.

Built to perform

Every MARQ Gen 3 model is constructed from Grade-5 titanium with a sapphire lens, keeping the case lightweight despite the serious technology packed inside. The 1.4-inch borderless AMOLED display runs at 3,000 nits brightness, making it the largest and clearest screen ever fitted to a MARQ watch. Garmin has also sealed the case with leakproof buttons across all six models, meaning every watch in the collection is rated for dives to 40 metres, not just the marine-focused editions.

The ceramic bezels are unique to each model, with colour baked all the way through the material rather than applied as a surface treatment. The white lettering on the Diver, for instance, is etched out and filled with ink, so scratches will never reveal a different colour underneath. It is the kind of detail that matters to the kind of buyer who wears a watch into environments most luxury timepieces would never survive.

Navigation and connectivity

The biggest functional leap over the previous generation sits inside the software. MARQ Gen 3 ships with worldwide preloaded TopoActive maps, meaning the watch is ready to navigate straight out of the box without syncing courses from a phone. Garmin has also added on-device address search, so users can type in a specific street address and receive turn-by-turn guidance to the door.

More significantly, the watches now include embedded inReach satellite connectivity. When LTE coverage is available, users can make calls, send messages and share live location data through the Garmin Messenger app. Beyond cell coverage, the satellite connection enables two-way messaging, location check-ins and SOS emergencies routed through Garmin's 24-hour staffed response centre. A built-in speaker and microphone add voice commands, phone calls from the wrist and music playback without Bluetooth headphones.

Six watches, six passions

The collection is split into six editions, each aligned to a different Garmin product family. The Adventurer pairs full-grain Italian leather with a 360-degree compass bezel and preloaded ClimbPro for real-time ascent data without a planned route. The Athlete comes on a silicone strap with VO2 max indicators and advanced running economy metrics. The Aviator features a padded calfskin bracelet, UTC hand and dynamic flight mapping for pilots.

The Commander brings tactical features including night vision compatibility, stealth mode and an Applied Ballistics solver, all on a camo jacquard-woven band. The Golfer includes Virtual Caddie, green contour data and more than 43,000 preloaded courses behind a ceramic bezel with an 18-hole indicator. And the newest addition, the Diver, combines scuba and free diving capabilities with marine features like autopilot control and tack assist, all on a 15mm microadjust strap designed to fit over a wetsuit.

Worth the step up?

Prices start at $2,500 for the Athlete and run to $3,100 for the Aviator, Commander and Diver editions. Battery life is rated at up to 18 days in smartwatch mode across the collection. The MARQ Gen 3 is available now through Garmin's website and authorised retailers.

What separates this launch from previous MARQ iterations is that the premium is no longer purely about materials. The worldwide mapping, route-less ClimbPro, satellite messaging and 128GB of internal storage give the MARQ genuine capabilities the Fenix 9 cannot replicate. For anyone whose passions take them beyond cell coverage, that difference may be worth the price of admission.
