Since its introduction in 1991, the Hermès Cape Cod has always carried a quiet elegance. Designed by Henri d’Origny, its distinctive “square within a rectangle” case shape drew from anchor-chain links, giving it a nautical undertone that felt more Riviera lunch than offshore racing. For most of its history, the collection leaned toward the feminine end of the spectrum, with double-tour leather straps and gem-set bezels defining its identity.
This year, on its 35th anniversary, Hermès has done something unexpected. The Cape Cod Titanium takes that familiar case and reshapes it entirely. Gone are the polished surfaces and rounded edges. In their place: satin-brushed top surfaces, bead-blasted flanks and a noticeably flatter profile. The result is a watch that feels more brutalist than pebble, more tool than trinket. The transformation is striking enough that you might double-take at the dial.
Under the sapphire crystal, the Charmilles-textured black dial is the biggest departure. A recessed centre with a sandblasted effect sits beneath a vertically brushed outer ring housing applied Arabic numerals. Rhodium-plated hour markers echo the chain-link motif of the lugs, while Super-LumiNova fills ensure legibility in low light. An orange central seconds hand provides the only splash of colour on the otherwise monochrome face, though Hermès has sensibly paired it with a matching orange rubber strap. Three other strap options are available: Black, Bleu Abysse and Jaune de Naples, all with quick-release spring bars.
The technical specifications back up the sporty intent. The 33mm-wide titanium case (46.15mm lug to lug) houses the Vaucher-manufactured H1912 automatic movement with a 45-hour power reserve. Crucially, water resistance is rated to 100 metres, making this the first Cape Cod you can genuinely take swimming without a second thought. At €6,150 (US$7,900 / £6,340), it undercuts the H08 collection while delivering a more distinctive wrist presence.
What makes this release significant is not the specs alone. It is the way Hermès has repositioned one of its heritage designs for a new audience. The Cape Cod Titanium occupies a space that few brands compete in: a non-round sports watch with genuine horological pedigree and a design that does not reference anyone else’s back catalogue. Whether on the orange rubber or the more restrained Bleu Abysse, this is a summer watch that stands apart from the integrated-bracelet crowd.
