Since its debut in 1991, the Cape Cod has occupied a special position within the Hermes watch collection. Designed by Henri d'Origny, the same hand behind the Arceau in 1978, its instantly recognisable square-within-a-rectangle case was inspired by the links of an anchor chain, producing one of the most original silhouettes in modern watchmaking. Over the decades, it has explored countless variations, while Martin Margiela's famous double-tour leather strap from 1998 cemented its status as a design icon. For 2026, Hermes takes the collection in an entirely different direction.
The new Cape Cod Titanium is the sportiest expression the family has ever seen. Almost every surface has been reconsidered, starting with a larger 41mm titanium case that trades the polished look of earlier Cape Cod models for a more technical appearance. All surfaces are now angular rather than rounded, with satin-brushed upper surfaces combined with bead-blasted case flanks giving the watch a restrained, nearly monochromatic look. The Cape Cod now feels far more like a contemporary sports watch while still preserving the design DNA that has always defined the collection.
Titanium also transforms the wearing experience. Even with the larger dimensions, the case remains lightweight and comfortable on the wrist, and water resistance has increased to 100 metres, making it genuinely suitable for everyday use. The dial is finished in black, appearing more dark grey in natural light, with a textured central section and a satin-brushed outer chapter ring that creates depth without relying on colour. Hermes has retained its distinctive Arabic numerals, executed as applied rhodium-plated markers filled with Super-LumiNova, which remain perfectly legible in all conditions.
The only splash of colour comes from the bright orange central seconds hand, injecting energy into an otherwise restrained composition. A tiny date window sits at 6 o'clock, neatly integrated into the symmetrical layout with digits in the same typeface as the hour markers. Power comes from the Manufacture Hermes calibre H1912, an automatic movement developed through the brand's long-standing partnership with Vaucher Manufacture Fleurier, which Hermes partially owns. Visible through the sapphire caseback and decorated with H logos over the bridges, it operates at 28,800 vibrations per hour and delivers a 45-hour power reserve.
Perhaps the most significant departure from the Cape Cod's history is the strap. Leather is out, replaced by integrated rubber straps available in black, Bleu Abysse, orange or Jaune de Naples. Quick-change functionality allows owners to switch between them easily, transforming the watch's personality in seconds. At EUR 6,150 (USD 7,900), the Cape Cod Titanium enters a competitive field of integrated sports watches, but it brings something none of its rivals can match: 35 years of Hermes design heritage wrapped in a material that finally makes the anchor-chain case feel right at home in the water.
