Jack Daniel's has unveiled Distillery Series Selection #17, a High Angel's Share Straight Tennessee Whiskey that transforms one of the distiller's oldest challenges into its newest virtue. Bottled at a commanding 138.4 proof and available exclusively in 375ml bottles, the expression represents a decade of patient, deliberate maturation at the top of Lynchburg's most intense barrelhouse.
The story begins in 2016, when traditional Jack Daniel's Tennessee Whiskey was laid down in new, charred American white oak barrels on the top floor of Barrelhouse 1-13, perched atop Coy Hill. At that elevation, the Tennessee heat hits hardest. More whiskey evaporates through the wood, a loss distillers call the angel's share, and the remaining spirit becomes increasingly concentrated. Nearly ten years later, what is left in those barrels carries a depth and intensity that lower-floor aging simply cannot replicate.
"This release is a perfect example of what happens when we let nature take the lead," said Jack Daniel's master distiller Chris Fletcher. "By resting these barrels on the very top floor of our Coy Hill barrelhouse, the intense heat increased the angel's share over the years. What's left behind in the wood is a beautifully concentrated profile that showcases a whole different side of our traditional Tennessee Whiskey."
The whiskey was selected by Jack Daniel's whiskey taster Dale McGee, who identified a batch that coats the palate in brown sugar, banana nut bread and a hint of maple syrup before settling into a long, warm finish with just the right touch of oak. It is the seventeenth release in Jack Daniel's Distillery Series, a line of experimental and limited whiskeys that has become a pilgrimage for collectors and enthusiasts who make the trip to Lynchburg.
Distillery Series #17 is available exclusively in Tennessee and at the White Rabbit Bottle Shop at the Jack Daniel Distillery, priced at $44.75. The limited availability and the distillery-only distribution have already made it one of the most sought-after Tennessee whiskies of the summer, and the 375ml format means those who secure a bottle will want to pour sparingly.
