Two years after a rebrand that split the internet, Jaguar has revealed the Type 01, its first fully electric production car. Unveiled at Storied NYC on October 6, the four-door grand tourer represents a £2.25 billion bet on the future of a 90-year-old British marque that many had written off.

A Clean Break With Everything Before It

The Type 01 looks like nothing else on the road. At 5.2 metres long and two metres wide, it is only a handspan shorter than a Bentley Flying Spur, with a cab-rearward design that gives it an exaggerated long bonnet and a roofline that sits just 1.4 metres off the ground. There is no rear window. Instead, a roof-mounted camera feeds a display inside the cabin, a decision Jaguar says was taken to improve rear head room while maintaining the car's dramatic silhouette.

The front end is dominated by a bold blank space where a grille would traditionally sit, flanked by slim LED headlights that measure just 3.3 inches tall and contain 17,000 pixels each. At the rear, horizontal slats hide the tail lights in what Jaguar's design team calls a "strike-through" treatment. The 23-inch wheels are standard, and the frameless doors feature brass detailing with the brand's leaper motif pressed into the body.

1,015 Horsepower From Three Motors

Underneath the aluminium body sits JEA, the Jaguar Electric Architecture, a bespoke platform that shares nothing with any existing Jaguar and is the subject of more than 360 patent applications. Chief engineer Jon Darlington and his team searched for a partner whose platform might suit the car's unusual dimensions but found nothing that could accommodate a 5.2-metre length on 23-inch wheels without compromise.

Three electric motors combine for 1,015 horsepower, driving all four wheels and launching the Type 01 from 0 to 62 mph in 3.2 seconds. A 118 kWh battery pack delivers up to 400 miles of range, and 350 kW DC fast charging can take the battery from 10 to 80 per cent in 22 minutes. Twin-chamber air springs and adaptive dampers are standard, as is four-wheel steering, which Jaguar says gives the Type 01 the turning circle of a Fiat 500.

A Cabin Inspired By Travertine Stone

Inside, the Type 01 abandons traditional wood veneers and analogue gauges for a minimalist, tech-forward cabin. A 24-inch OLED driver display dominates the view ahead, with a seven-inch portrait screen in the centre for climate and comfort controls. A central spine runs the length of the cabin, dividing four seating zones and hiding stowage, cup holders and a second screen for rear passengers. The panoramic glass roof floods the space with light, and the interior draws on what Jaguar describes as the layered tones of travertine stone.

Jaguar's managing director Rawdon Glover has been candid about the target audience. The Type 01 is aimed at younger, wealthier buyers who are "very design literate, very technology literate" rather than the shrinking, ageing customer base that defined the brand's previous era. The car will not launch in China for at least two years, and Glover recently took a prototype to the offices of Nvidia, where CEO Jensen Huang reportedly had a ride and loved it.

The Stakes Could Not Be Higher

The Type 01 arrives at a precarious moment for parent company JLR, which is still recovering from a cyberattack that cost the UK economy an estimated £1.9 billion and recently announced 4,000 job cuts as part of a cost-saving drive. The car starts at £130,000 in the UK and roughly $130,500 in the US, double the starting price of the F-Type it effectively replaces and positioning Jaguar between top-end Mercedes and entry-level Bentley.

It follows the Ferrari Luce and the Bentley Torcal, both revealed earlier in 2026, as luxury carmakers race to prove that electric vehicles can command six-figure prices. Jaguar is betting that enough buyers will see the Type 01 not as a compromise but as a statement. A 60-unit Chromatic Moments limited edition in satin French Ultramarine or London Red suggests the brand is not short on confidence. First deliveries are expected in the second half of 2027.
