JAY-Z does not do things by halves. Over three nights at Yankee Stadium, from Friday July 11 to Sunday July 13, he turned the Bronx into the centre of the musical universe, celebrating the 30th anniversary of Reasonable Doubt and the 25th anniversary of The Blueprint with a residency that will be talked about for decades.
Friday night opened the JAAY-Z 30 campaign with a performance of Reasonable Doubt in full. Beyonce and Blue Ivy Carter joined him on stage, alongside Nas and his original mentor Jaz-O. Saturday shifted focus to The Blueprint, with Eminem emerging to trade verses on Renegade in one of the loudest moments of the entire run. A Biggie tribute mashed through the stadium sound system like a prayer.
But it was the third night, billed as JAAY-Z Extra Innings after overwhelming demand forced an additional date, that cemented this series as legendary. After a security breach delayed the start by over two hours, JAY-Z emerged at 12:20am with an apology and a promise: roughly 10,000 people had been stuck outside after someone rushed the gates. He refused to start until everyone was safe. When the music finally began, he delivered nearly 50 songs across almost three hours.
The guest list read like a fantasy festival lineup. Beyonce returned for Drunk in Love. Rihanna, making a rare live appearance, claimed she missed the stage before smashing Run This Town and Bitch Better Have My Money. Usher delivered Heart of the City and Throwback. Pharrell Williams came out for a medley of their collaborations. Clipse reunited for Grindin. The-Dream covered Frank Ocean's part on No Church in the Wild. Jeezy, Fat Joe, Jadakiss, Jermaine Dupri and Swizz Beatz all took their turns.
The set traversed three decades of JAY-Z's catalogue, from Dead Presidents and Can I Live through 99 Problems, Niggas in Paris and Empire State of Mind, closing with an a cappella Dear Summer and Encore while fireworks lit the New York sky. By the time the lights came on, it was past 3am. Nobody cared about tomorrow morning.
The Yankee Stadium residency now heads abroad, with dates at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, the Stade de France in Paris and Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London still to come. If the Bronx run is any indication, those nights will be equally unmissable.
