Ken Carson has never been one for half measures. The Atlanta rapper's fifth studio album, xperiment, landed on streaming platforms on July 3 with the weight of an entire subculture behind it, and it delivers exactly what the Opium faithful have been waiting for: 22 tracks of distorted bass, chaotic beat switches, and an Auto-Tuned delivery that has become one of the most recognisable sounds in modern rap.
Arriving just over a year after More Chaos earned Carson his first Billboard 200 number one, xperiment doubles down on the rage rap formula that turned him from a SoundCloud curiosity into a genuine chart force. The project opens with "wheredoistart", a fitting entry point that sets the tone with booming 808s and a sense of momentum that rarely lets up across the album's hour-long runtime.
The feature list reads like a who's who of Carson's inner circle and beyond. Playboi Carti, the Opium label founder and Carson's mentor, appears on two tracks: "deaf note" and the closer "wedidit". Lil Uzi Vert brings their trademark frenetic energy to "ghost", a relentless cut that sees both artists trading bars over one of the album's hardest-hitting instrumentals. Young Thug, who made a surprise appearance during Carson's Rolling Loud Orlando set, features on "drug kit". Destroy Lonely reunites with his Opium stablemate on "shopping", while rising electronic artist 2hollis contributes vocals and production on "shadeson", pushing Carson's sound into fresh territory.
The rollout was as unconventional as the music itself. Carson hid USB drives in Atlanta, Los Angeles, Chicago, and New York for fans to find, each containing early access to unreleased tracks. He previewed material during headlining sets at Rolling Loud Orlando and Summer Smash in Chicago, with surprise appearances from the very artists who ended up on the final tracklist. It was a scavenger hunt meets album campaign, and it worked: the anticipation was palpable long before the first stream went live.
Standout tracks include "edm", which lives up to its title with rave-tinged synths that crash into punishing bass, and "ghost", where Ken and Uzi complement each other with natural chemistry. "Deaf note" with Carti is pure Opium energy, the two artists sliding over dark, distorted production with the kind of reckless confidence that has defined the label since its inception.
The production credits run deep.
