Kimi Antonelli produced the performance of his young career at Silverstone, winning the British Grand Prix sprint race before storming to pole position for Sunday's main event. The 19-year-old Mercedes driver overtook Lewis Hamilton's Ferrari on track to take sprint victory by nearly three seconds, then returned hours later to edge out both Ferraris and his own teammate George Russell for the top grid spot.
The Italian's Saturday began with a composed drive in the 17-lap sprint. Starting alongside Hamilton on the front row, Antonelli made the decisive pass on the seven-time world champion and pulled clear, eventually crossing the line 2.7 seconds ahead. Lando Norris completed an all-British podium in third, while Russell finished fourth after a damaged car from a Q1 crash could not mount a challenge.
Qualifying told a similar story. Antonelli set the benchmark in Q2 and raised it again in Q3, posting a 1:28.111 that nobody could match. Charles Leclerc grabbed second by 0.175 seconds, pushing Hamilton to third in what must have been a bittersweet session for the Briton, who has won at Silverstone a record nine times. Russell, still dealing with damage from his earlier wall strike, could only manage fourth.
Hamilton had started the sprint from pole after a brilliant Friday qualifying, and the home crowd roared as he led the early laps. But Antonelli's Mercedes had superior pace, and the championship leader made his move with authority. "A bit stressed because I never like going first for the last run," Antonelli admitted afterwards. "The last lap was very tidy. It came all together."
The wider competitive picture was striking. Neither Red Bull nor McLaren could challenge at the front. Max Verstappen qualified seventh, with teammate Isack Hadjar actually outqualifying him in fifth. Norris, the reigning world champion, was 0.7 seconds off the pace in sixth, and Oscar Piastri was nearly a full second adrift in eighth. Racing Bulls impressed with both Liam Lawson and Arvid Lindblad inside the top ten, Lindblad on his British Grand Prix debut.
Antonelli now leads the championship by 43 points over Norris, and with Mercedes having taken pole at every race this season, Sunday's grand prix promises to be a coronation rather than a contest. Whether anyone can disrupt the Silver Arrows' dominance over 52 laps remains the only real question.
