MALMAISON BIRMINGHAM: A HOTEL THAT KNOWS ITS OWN STORY

Malmaison Birmingham

Cluster Sales Manager Brittney Crawley on the Royal Mail sorting office that became one of Birmingham most distinctive hotels, cocktails themed around Napoleon and Josephone, and why listening to the city matters more than telling it what to think

Malmaison Birmingham does not look like a hotel that used to sort post. It looks like a hotel that was always meant to be here, which is precisely the point. Set inside The Mailbox, the building that once served as Birmingham Royal Mail sorting office, it carries its industrial past without shouting about it. The letters embossed into the structure, found during the redevelopment and preserved in the fabric of the building, are the kind of detail you might walk past a dozen times before you notice it. And once you do, the whole place reads differently.

Guests are not just staying in a hotel. They are staying in a piece of Birmingham history that has been thoughtfully reimagined.

The building transformation from working mail hub to lifestyle destination is one of the UK most successful urban regeneration stories. But Malmaison did not just move in. The brand has always chosen buildings with stories, and Birmingham is a natural fit: a city that has reinvented itself repeatedly while keeping its character intact.

A Building With a Past

Malmaison Birmingham occupies a space that played a significant role in the city commercial life for decades. When the Royal Mail sorting office was redeveloped, it became The Mailbox, home to designer shops, restaurants and, eventually, this hotel. The transition from sorting office to boutique hotel was not cosmetic. It was structural. The building had to be entirely reconceived, and what emerged was a property that celebrates both its heritage and the city around it.

Brittney Crawley, Cluster Sales Manager for Malmaison Birmingham, sees that duality every day. Guests are not just staying in a hotel. They are staying in a piece of Birmingham history that has been thoughtfully reimagined. It is a distinction that matters. Malmaison has never been a brand that replicates. Each property takes its cue from the building and the neighbourhood, and Birmingham is no exception.

Millions of letters passed through here, carrying people news, memories and connections. Those embossed letters are a simple reminder of where the building started.

The City, Not Just the Brand

Creating a sense of place in a hotel that carries a national brand is a balancing act. Malmaison has a recognisable identity: confident interiors, a strong bar culture, a brasserie that takes itself seriously without being stiff. But guests who choose Malmaison also want to feel connected to the city they have come to visit.

For the Birmingham team, that means hiring locally. Many of the colleagues are from the area and bring their own knowledge and enthusiasm for the city. Whether it is recommending an independent business, pointing someone towards a cultural event, or sharing the stories behind Birmingham landmarks and neighbourhoods, those personal conversations help guests experience the city through a local lens rather than simply as visitors passing through.

It is less about us telling our story and more about listening to theirs.

The ambassador programme has accelerated that process. Rather than the hotel telling Birmingham what it offers, the ambassadors, people who actually move the needle in the city, help the team understand what matters to the people who live and work there. Round table sessions with both new and familiar faces have created a genuine two-way dialogue. Feedback on food, drink, events, community engagement and the overall guest experience has shaped how the venue evolves. It has created a genuine two-way dialogue and given us the chance to learn from the people who know Birmingham best, ensuring we continue to evolve in a way that feels relevant, inclusive, and connected to the local community.

Love, Infidelity, Power and Forgiveness

The story behind the Malmaison name starts not with a hotel group but with a chateau. The Chateau de Malmaison was the home of Napoleon and Josephone, and while Napoleon tends to be the more famous half of the pairing, it is Josephone whose influence resonates most strongly today. She transformed the estate into a gathering place filled with art, conversation and extraordinary gardens, becoming known for her passion for roses and rare botanical collections.

That connection finds its way into the bar and cocktail programme at Birmingham. Floral notes, seasonal ingredients and subtle references to the chateau appear throughout the cocktail list and menus, but they are never there simply for the sake of history. They acknowledge where the name comes from and the spirit of creativity and hospitality that made the estate so special.

Our signature cocktails are grouped into four themes: Love, Infidelity, Power and Forgiveness.

Those four themes, drawn from the 228 letters Napoleon wrote to Josephone, reveal a relationship that was passionate, complicated, ambitious and, at times, surprisingly vulnerable. Emotions most people can relate to in one way or another, which makes the story feel timeless rather than historical.

The food follows a similar philosophy. Dishes take inspiration from the French roots of the Malmaison name while embracing modern influences and bold flavours, fired on Konro and Josper grills at Chez Mal, the hotel brasserie. Together, the food and drink menus are designed to spark curiosity and conversation, much like the chateau itself once did. Rather than retelling Napoleon and Josephone story word for word, they offer a contemporary interpretation of the people, passions and experiences behind the Malmaison name.

The Detail in the Walls

There is a detail most guests never notice. When The Mailbox was being redeveloped, letters found during the process were incorporated into the building design and permanently embossed into the structure. It is easy to miss, but once you know it is there, it takes on a whole new meaning. Before it became a hotel, millions of letters passed through here, carrying people news, memories and connections. Those embossed letters quietly honour the building past. It is one of those little details that feels very fitting for Malmaison, because it is a reminder that every great building has a history worth preserving.

Six and a Half Years and Counting

Brittney Crawley grew up in New Jersey, in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains, with Danish roots that have always been part of who she is. Eleven years ago she moved to England and, somewhere along the way, it became home. Hospitality felt natural because she has always loved meeting people and hearing their stories. She has now been with the Malmaison brand for six and a half years, starting in Cheltenham before moving to Birmingham six months ago to take on the cluster role.

As Cluster Sales Manager, what excites me most is the people. I love building relationships, whether that is with clients, local businesses, community partners, or our own teams.

It is a role that allows her to connect people, create opportunities and help showcase everything the hotel has to offer. Working in Birmingham has been a particular pleasure. It is such a diverse, welcoming and ambitious city, and I have really enjoyed getting to know it. The most rewarding part is building genuine connections within the community and playing a small part in bringing people together. At its heart, hospitality is about making people feel welcome, and that is still the part of the job she enjoys the most.
