When Nikka Whisky suspended its age-statement expressions in 2015, it was a decision born of success rather than failure. Demand for Japanese whisky had outstripped supply so dramatically that the distillery could no longer guarantee the aged stocks needed for its most revered bottlings. One by one, the Yoichi and Miyagikyo age statements disappeared from shelves, replaced by non-age-statement versions that showcased Nikka's blending skill but left purists waiting.

Now, that wait is over. Nikka has officially launched the Miyagikyo Single Malt 10 Years Old, the flagship expression from its Sendai distillery and the companion piece to the Yoichi 10 Year Old that returned in 2022. For enthusiasts who have watched the Japanese whisky market grapple with shortages, price inflation and the steady disappearance of aged stock, this is a significant moment.

The new Miyagikyo 10 is bottled at 45% ABV and priced at $174.99 for a 700ml bottle, with just 1,572 bottles allocated for the US market. It has been crafted by Nikka's current blending team using carefully reserved whisky batches, a deliberate strategy to ensure consistency across future releases. No more vanishing acts.

The flavour profile has evolved alongside the packaging. Nikka describes fruity aromas reminiscent of apples and citrus, underscored by a subtle sweet vanilla from oak maturation. The palate offers ripe fruitiness harmonised with the sweetness of malt, finishing with a sweet and bitter character drawn from the cask. It is a profile that leans into Miyagikyo's reputation for elegance, a counterpoint to the robust, peated character of its Yoichi sibling.

The packaging has been entirely redesigned. The label is now made from Japanese craft washi paper, its long fibres lending a tactile quality that mirrors the whisky's textured palate. The colour scheme has shifted from the deep rose that once signalled Miyagikyo's sherry-cask influence to a deep forest green, a reference to the verdant gorge surrounding the distillery in Sendai. In parallel, the Yoichi 10 Year Old has received its own design refresh, adopting the same washi label format with traditional Japanese indigo blue as its signature colour, representing the sea that surrounds the northern distillery.

Miyagikyo Distillery was founded in 1969 by Masataka Taketsuru, the father of Japanese whisky, who chose the site in the Miyagikyo valley for its clean air, pure water and humid climate, conditions he believed would produce a distinctly different spirit from the coastal Yoichi. Over five decades later, that founding vision has been vindicated. The return of the 10 Year Old is not merely a product launch. It is a statement that Nikka's patience has been rewarded and that the stocks are finally sufficient to support the expressions that made Japanese whisky a global phenomenon.

Available from select retailers this month, the Miyagikyo Single Malt 10 Years Old is a bottle worth seeking out. Not just for what is in the glass, but for what it represents: the end of a ten-year wait and the beginning of a new chapter for one of Japan's most respected distilleries.
