Panoptis Escape: A Myconian Gem Above the Aegean

Panoptis Escape

High in the hills of Mykonos, a property where the views justify the mythology of the Greek Gods. AJ Bailey checks in.

The Aegean is a region I've wanted to explore for a long time, and there's no better place to start than its most popular island. Mykonos.

Moments after arrival at the airport came the first taste of Panoptis Escape's service. A WhatsApp message: "Good afternoon Mr Bailey, this is the Panoptis Escape Team. Your driver is ready for you at Arrivals." Simple, but it made the arrival feel special instantly and seamless. That matters to me. Service at its peak.

Panoptis sits high in the hills of Mykonos. The drive takes you through scenic neighbourhoods and past the most expensive villa on the island, which is jaw-dropping in itself. That's just the beginning of the sensory overload. Then comes the steep ascent to the hotel entrance.

The first thing you notice on arrival is the helicopter perched on the helipad, metres away from the aesthetically designed gates. Beyond them, the most calm and relaxing reception you'll ever see. My advice once you step out of the transfer: turn around and look at the view from the top of the hill.

That smile of hers would brighten anyone's day.

Eleni, Panoptis Escape

One thing I'm starting to notice about Greece is that the Greek people are genuinely kind and warm, and Panoptis was just the beginning of my experience of this. First I encountered Dimitra, extremely nice and very friendly. She showed me around the impressive property perched directly on top of the hill with breathtaking panoramic views, and explained the history behind Panoptis, which I love to know about.

Then came the beautiful Eleni. Over the course of my stay I got to know her very well. That smile of hers would brighten anyone's day, and her personality and aura were amazing.

Finally, the manager of Panoptis, Konstantinos. Usually managers are never really present in my experience of hotel stays. Konstantinos was at the forefront of it all and one of the most impressive managers I've encountered. Not only was he completely engaged with me and what I do, but I also witnessed how good he was with other guests. That says an awful lot about the hotel.

Dimitra showed us to Villa number 3. The walk is short but seriously engaging in what you're about to experience. You begin by walking through a corridor cut through the rock to the entrance of the villa, and then the shock hits you.

The sheer size and style is gorgeous, with that Myconian design and feel that already immerses you into the culture of the island. And then you see your private infinity pool outside.

The view is jaw-dropping. So amazing that you understand where the mythology of the Greek Gods came from.

There was a birthday party due in the evening at the hotel, but that wasn't a problem. We ordered room service and ate on the terrace with the infinity pool just below. The sunset dinner views were a visual experience I may struggle to get anywhere else.

The view is so amazing you understand where the Greek Gods came from.

This hotel is just the beginning of the story of the Aegean region. Panoptis was an experience I will never forget in any sense. A Myconian gem.
