Studio Nicholson has picked up exactly where it left off with ASICS. The London-based label, known for its purist approach to everyday dressing, has unveiled its latest collaborative iteration of the GEL-KINETIC SP, and this time the pair arrives as an APAC-exclusive with a considered redesign that swaps athletic convention for material restraint.
The two colourways, dark brown and black, are immediately set apart by their upper construction. Standard performance mesh has been replaced with a rich nubuck leather that lends tactile depth without adding visual noise. The most striking detail is a symmetrical zip-up gusset closure that runs along the upper, concealing both brands' logos beneath a clean, continuous surface. It is a move that speaks directly to Studio Nicholson's design philosophy, where branding takes a back seat to form and materiality. The bespoke zipper is finished with a nubuck leather knot tie, a small but deliberate gesture that bridges craft and utility.
Beyond the closure, the upper balances its minimal framework with subtle functional details: perforations in the structured toe box, smooth leather side panels, softly rolled painted edges and understated whip-stitching across the X-heel. Nothing feels ornamental. Each element serves a purpose while maintaining the stripped-back sensibility that defines the collaboration.
Underfoot, the sole unit integrates ASICS' FF BLAST foam for energy return and SCUTOID GEL technology for advanced cushioning, ensuring all-day wearability without compromising the silhouette's lean proportions. A biomorphic-inspired design enhances flexibility and natural fit, allowing the shoe to move with the foot rather than around it.
The collaboration reflects Studio Nicholson's long-standing affinity with Japanese design culture, pairing ASICS' technical heritage with the London label's knack for quiet precision. Priced at £235 GBP, the GEL-KINETIC SP will become available exclusively in South Korea from 12 June, with wider availability across Studio Nicholson retail locations in China and Japan starting mid-July.
