There is a category of house that describes itself as food-led, and then there is ERGON House Athens, which invented the category. Situated at the foot of the Acropolis in Plaka, the historical heart of Athens, it is a house built around a marketplace rather than a marketplace attached to a house, and the distinction is visible from the moment you walk through the door.
The ground floor is a modern-day Agora: a constellation of greengrocers, a butcher, a fishmonger, a bakery, a delicatessen, a roastery and a home and kitchenware section, arranged around a central restaurant and bar. Above it are the rooms. On the roof is a bar looking directly across to the Parthenon. The guiding motto is three words: Eat, Sleep, Repeat. It is not a marketing slogan. It is an architectural programme.
Food is at the forefront of our hospitality, the guiding thread that runs through Ergon House, from the Agora marketplace to the cooking classes in the communal kitchens and the smallest treats from your in-room minibar.
ERGON House Athens
The Vision and Story
ERGON began not as a hospitality company but as a food company. The first store was a grocery shop that opened in 2008, with the aim of showcasing small producers from all over Greece and presenting local products in the best possible way. From that principle of quality, the company has grown to a constantly growing selection of products from small producers across Greece, with 23 company-owned and franchise delis, restaurants, markets and houses across Greece, the UK, Belgium, Cyprus and Qatar.
ERGON House Athens is the flagship that distils this philosophy into a single building. The concept is simple in description and radical in execution: a house where food leads the rhythm, uniting exceptional local flavours, artisans and a vibrant ground-floor Agora with rooms directly above. The boundaries between a great meal and sweet dreams have been deliberately dissolved, so that the experience of staying at the house is continuous with the experience of eating in its marketplace.
The location reinforces the concept. Plaka, known as the neighbourhood of the gods, sits beneath the Acropolis, its narrow streets filled with neoclassical buildings, lively tavernas and shops. ERGON House sits within this context as a contemporary interpretation of the ancient Athenian marketplace, a place where the city gathered around food long before houses existed.
Design and Sensory Atmosphere
The design of ERGON House Athens is anchored by a 25-metre glass atrium that rises through the building, flooding the ground-floor Agora with natural light and creating a visual connection between the marketplace below and the rooms above. A vertical orchard grows within the atrium, bringing greenery into the architectural framework and reinforcing the relationship between food and space that defines the property.
A mural by the Greek artist INO runs through the interior, adding a contemporary artistic layer to a building that is otherwise rooted in traditional Greek craftsmanship. The rooms honour Greek heritage through honest, traditional materials and local craftsmanship, keeping the spaces peaceful above the bustling market. The contrast between the energy of the Agora and the calm of the rooms is deliberate, a transition from the sensory intensity of a marketplace to the quiet of a private retreat, achieved through materials, sound design and the physical separation of the floors.
Culinary Excellence and the Agora
The Agora is not a decorative concept. It is a functioning modern neighbourhood market bringing together a butcher, fishmonger, bakery, deli and roastery around a central restaurant and bar. Contemporary Greek dishes are made from small-scale artisanal producers, the same producers whose products line the shelves of the delicatessen, so the distance between the ingredient and the plate is measured in metres rather than miles.
The restaurant serves signature meals that celebrate the best of Greek cuisine culture, with a farm-to-table seasonal produce harvest sourced within Greece. The menu is not frozen in tradition but built on it, using the vocabulary of Greek food to create dishes that feel contemporary rather than nostalgic. The bar extends this philosophy into the evening, with a focus on Greek wines and spirits that most international guests will not have encountered before.
The communal kitchens offer cooking classes that turn the eating experience into a learning experience, giving guests the tools to reproduce the flavours at home. This is food as participation rather than consumption, a philosophy that treats the table as the heart of the home and the marketplace as the heart of the city.
Cities were built around marketplaces and the table is the heart of the home. We are creating a world where the positive energies of Greek food and hospitality converge under one roof.

Retiré and Rooftop Living
Perched atop ERGON House, Retiré Bar is a serene seasonal rooftop retreat open from late March to late October, nestled among olive groves that create an unexpected oasis above the city. Opening at 5pm, it serves craft cocktails alongside bites and flatbreads, with views directly across to the Acropolis and the Parthenon, a backdrop that makes the experience of sitting there feel less like a house amenity and more like a privilege of geography.
The rooftop is designed as a counterpoint to the intensity of the Agora below. Where the ground floor is energetic, social and loud with the sounds of a working market, the rooftop is calm, open and dominated by the skyline of Athens. The olive trees provide shade and scent, the cocktails are handcrafted with the same attention to ingredients that defines the food programme, and the view of the Acropolis at golden hour is the kind of thing that makes scheduling easy: you go up before sunset, and you stay until the lights come on across the city.
24 Hours at ERGON House
The signature itinerary at ERGON House is designed around the Eat, Sleep, Repeat philosophy, and it unfolds naturally over 24 hours. Morning begins with breakfast in the Agora, a complimentary signature a la carte spread that sets the tone for a day organised around food. From there, the Agora market invites exploration: the greengrocer, the butcher, the fishmonger, the bakery, each one a small world of its own, each one staffed by people who know the products and the producers.
A private cooking class in the communal kitchen offers the chance to learn how to turn the ingredients from the market into a meal, guided by the house's culinary team. A long, leisurely lunch follows, either in the restaurant or assembled from the Agora's counters. The afternoon is for Plaka, the Acropolis, the museums and the narrow streets that make Athens feel like a city that has been continuously inhabited for thousands of years because it has.
Golden hour brings the return to Retiré, where sunset cocktails with Acropolis views close the circle of a day organised around food. It is a day that does not require a guidebook or an itinerary, because the house has already designed it for you, not through a programme or a schedule but through the architecture of the space itself.
Looking Ahead and Core Philosophy
The future of ERGON House Athens is focused on deepening rather than expanding. The guiding motto, Eat, Sleep, Repeat, is not about repetition but about connection: deepening connections with local producers, showcasing regional Greek food culture, and gathering people around the table.
The brand's portfolio of over 600 unique products grows by approximately 10 per cent each year, the result of extensive scouting for new suppliers and research into food technologies. This commitment to small and honest local producers is not a marketing position but a family tradition. The founders' grandfather was a grocer in Thessaloniki, and the company was raised on Greek delicacies and warm hospitality. ERGON House Athens is the physical expression of that heritage, a building where every product on every shelf has a story, and every story leads back to a person who made it.
As the only integrated Greek food brand in the world, with presence across five countries, ERGON has the scale to influence how Greek food culture is perceived internationally. But the flagship in Athens remains the reference point, the place where the philosophy is most fully realised and where the relationship between food, hospitality and place is most clearly articulated. It is a house that believes in the positive power of food to transform moments and moods, and it has built a building to prove it.
