THE OMNIA: Where American Modernism Meets the Matterhorn

There is a hotel in Zermatt that you reach through a tunnel cut into rock. Not a decorative tunnel, not a passage designed to impress, but an actual passage carved through the mountain on which the hotel sits, because when you build something 45 metres above a car-free village at 1,649.4 metres above sea level, the approach matters. The rock elevator that carries you up from the village street is the first signal that THE OMNIA is not a hotel that does things halfway.

Designed by the late New York architect Ali Tayar, THE OMNIA is a contemporary interpretation of the American mountain lodge set in one of the most dramatic landscapes in Europe. Zermatt sits at the foot of 38 four-thousand-metre peaks. The Matterhorn dominates the skyline with an authority that makes every other mountain feel like it is trying too hard. And THE OMNIA, with its grey granite, white oak, and floor-to-ceiling glass, occupies this landscape not by competing with it but by framing it.

A Lodge That Speaks Two Languages

Ali Tayar designed THE OMNIA to hold a conversation between two traditions that most hotels would keep separate. The Valais heritage is present in the grey granite, the white oak, the arcaded walkways that echo the fortified mountain towns of the region. The American Modernist tradition shows up in the furniture: Mies van der Rohe chairs that sit with the confidence of objects that changed the definition of what a chair could be. Eero Saarinen tables. Vladimir Kagan sofas. USM Modular Furniture, the Swiss system that Tayar knew intimately through his collaboration with the USM Haller brand, the same company whose fourth-generation owner, Alexander Scherer, built THE OMNIA. Inspired by the region's centuries-old Alpine traditions and designed by New York architect Ali Tayar, THE OMNIA merges American Modernism with Valais craftsmanship, grey granite and white oak meeting Mies van der Rohe, Saarinen, and Kagan within a single coherent space.

The rooms themselves are not numbered. There are 30 of them, including 12 suites, and each one varies. Some have open fireplaces. Others have bay-window baths overlooking the village, or private saunas, or balconies that face the Matterhorn with an immediacy that makes you forget there is glass between you and the peak. Large-format photographs by Swiss artists Balthasar Burkhard, Bruno Augsburger, and Simon Opladen line the corridors, adding a curated stillness that prevents the design from tipping into pastiche. This is not a hotel that assembled a mood board. This is a hotel where every object was chosen by someone who understood why it mattered.

The Kitchen and the Seasons

Since May 2026, Executive Chef Markian Barmettler has led the kitchen at THE OMNIA with a philosophy that sounds simpler than it is: seasonal produce from the alpine region, prepared with precision and contemporary interpretation. The menu follows the seasons and the region's producers. Carefully selected ingredients, each given space to speak. Tradition and a contemporary signature working side by side, without one overshadowing the other.

The dining experience extends across three spaces: the restaurant, the lounge, and the sun terraces that open onto the mountain air with a generosity that makes indoor dining feel like a missed opportunity on clear days. The cuisine is Alpine in its sourcing but not in its ambition. Barmettler's approach fits the character of the house, carrying guests through multi-day stays with variety and a clear common thread, from generous breakfasts on the terrace to dinners that make the most of what the Valais valley provides at any given moment.

A Wellness Sanctuary Above the Clouds

The spa at THE OMNIA is not the kind that exists as an afterthought appended to a luxury hotel. It was designed as part of the experience from the beginning. An indoor/outdoor pool, Finnish and bio saunas, herbal steam rooms, and Aesop skincare treatments form the core of a wellness programme exclusively available to hotel guests, with a heated outdoor Jacuzzi positioned directly overlooking the Matterhorn. The distinction matters. A spa that serves only hotel guests operates at a different pace. There is no competition for the pool, no queue for the steam room, no sense that the wellness programme is a revenue centre first and a retreat second.

Sandrine Etienne, the resident massage therapist, specialises in foot reflex and sports massage. Born and bred in the Valais, she brings a local specificity to the treatment menu that reinforces what THE OMNIA does best: understanding that place is not a backdrop but an active ingredient in the experience.

The Rock and the View

Zermatt is car-free. You arrive by train or by helicopter, and from the station, a private elevator carved into the rock carries you up to the hotel. This is not a gimmick. The elevator was the logical solution to building on a cliff, and it became the defining moment of arrival: 45 metres of ascent through solid mountain, emerging into a lobby where the Matterhorn fills the window as if it had been waiting for you.

Managing Director Christian Eckert leads a team of approximately 50 staff, and the operation runs with the kind of attentiveness that makes luxury feel effortless rather than performed. Philippe Clarinval, who previously oversaw the hotel, instilled a philosophy that every employee dines at the hotel as a guest, ensuring that service is rooted in personal understanding rather than professional obligation. The result is a hotel where the warmth is genuine because the people providing it have experienced the other side.

Beyond the hotel, Zermatt offers year-round mountain access. Glacier skiing in winter, themed summer trails, and the Golf Club Matterhorn for those who find their peace on fairways rather than peaks. The surrounding 38 four-thousand-metre peaks provide enough drama to fill weeks, and THE OMNIA provides enough comfort to make returning to the hotel feel like arriving rather than retreating.
